It
seems far from the hustle and bustle of Wilmington and Myrtle
Beach. Yet a short drive from either place will lead you to
Southport, NC—a coastal gem! Since 1792, Southport has
been a star on the North Carolina map, first, as a primary
seaport during the Revolutionary War period, and now, as one
of the few active fishing villages on the southeastern NC
coast.
Today, it retains much of its heritage. You’ll find
it during a stroll through the downtown area, with its old
brick storefronts and antique shops brimming with pieces of
the past. You’ll also find it along Southport’s
waterfront, when on any given day you can catch sight of shrimp
boats bringing in their catch. Even better, you can savor
the freshest seafood you’ve ever eaten at one of many
dockside eateries.
Southport, NC is the laid-back hub of Brunswick County—one
of coastal North Carolina’s fastest growing regions.
Perhaps it is the long stretches of golden beaches, the championship
golf courses or the ideal year ‘round climate that tempt
thousands of people each year to relocate or retire here in
communities like St. James, Winding River, Seawatch or RiverSea.
Regardless of the reason, Southport and the surrounding coastal
area will delight and charm even the most world-weary.
Take a stroll beneath the canopy of oak trees lining the streets
dotted with historic Victorian era homes. Fall back in time
with a visit to nearby Orton Plantation—with its antebellum
mansion and acres of gardens. For a taste of pirate and seaport
lore, drop by Southport’s own maritime museum. Relax
at Southport’s Waterfront Park, where you can watch
the sunset from a swing bench and then enjoy dinner at the
town’s eclectic collection of restaurants—from
fresh seafood dockside to Asian, European, Mexican and more.
If you like to liven things up for the Fourth of July, then
you’ll be at home in Southport. It is home to North
Carolina’s largest, and most impressive Independence
Day festive, featuring arts and crafts shows and culminating
with a spectacular fireworks display over the Cape Fear River.
Southport is easily reached from N.C. 87 from the north, or
N.C. 211 from the west. Or take a ride on the ferry from Fort
Fisher, at the end of U.S. 241 in Wilmington. From any direction,
you’ll know you’ve arrived at a special place.
