SOUTHPORT:
OUR FAVORITE COASTAL NC VILLAGE It is the last of its kind: the quiet coastal NC enclave, known as much for its rich history as for its seafood shacks, shady streets and old fashioned charm. Welcome to Southport, North Carolina. There is a little something for everyone in this coastal town: history buffs can hone their maritime knowledge of the coastal NC area at Southport's own NC Maritime Museum. Explore the antique shops, galleries and one-of-a-kind boutiques. Anglers of all ages and experience vie for big prize money in the US Open King Mackerel Tournament, held each year in early autumn since 1980. Paddlers will find no shortage of launching points to explore the area's many tidal creeks and rivers. No boat? No problem. There are several boat charter operators, as well as kayak and canoe rental services. Held for the past 200 years, the NC 4th of July Festival attracts tens of thousands each year to this unassuming community. The festival is vintage Americana, with its parade, arts and crafts shows, live entertainment, funnel cakes and shrimp-aroos. The highlight, of course, is the spectacular fireworks display - one of the largest in the state of North Carolina. Southport is a strollers delight, with it's quiet streets shaded by giant Live Oaks. Admire the well-kept Victorian homes and stunning river sunsets. Sit in one of the town's swinging benches and watch the boats navigate the mouth of the Cape Fear River. Hop on the ferry to Bald Head Island for a day exploring this private island's maritime forests, or climbing to the top of Old Baldy lighthouse. Sit back and relax on the family-oriented Oak Island, where you will find miles and miles of clean, uncrowded beaches. If you are considering a move to the Southport area, there are many many real estate options. The community of St. James (incorporated as a town since 1999) offers residents resort style amenities, beach club, famous golf courses and choices of everything from waterfront mansions to easy-to-maintain town homes. Just outside of Southport are the conservation-minded communities of Winding River and Palmetto Creek, each offering distinctive homes, wooded homesites and first-class recreation facilities with clubhouses, pools, tennis courts and walking trails. Winding River also features the Carolina National, a world-class, 27-hole golf course built around the community, a river-front community center and ocean front beach club.
There is so much to choose from and Plantation's Properties can be your guide!
