There is a little something for everyone in this coastal town: history buffs can hone their maritime knowledge of the coastal NC area at Southport's own NC Maritime Museum. Explore the antique shops, galleries and one-of-a-kind boutiques. Anglers of all ages and experience vie for big prize money in the US Open King Mackerel Tournament, held each year in early autumn since 1980. Paddlers will find no shortage of launching points to explore the area's many tidal creeks and rivers. No boat? No problem. There are several boat charter operators, as well as kayak and canoe rental services.
Held for the past 200 years, the NC 4th of July Festival attracts tens of thousands each year to this unassuming community. The festival is vintage Americana, with its parade, arts and crafts shows, live entertainment, funnel cakes and shrimp-aroos. The highlight, of course, is the spectacular fireworks display - one of the largest in the state of North Carolina.
