News from The St. James Activities
Committee

Sign up now for Dinners for Six!

St. James Activities Committee reminds you
to sign up for the Fall series of DF6.
Dinners for Six is an opportunity to become
acquainted with other friendly St. James
residents.  “DF6″ consists of dining with
two other couples each month during
September, October and November.  Couples
can be spouses, significant others, or two
friends looking to enjoy the company of
their St. James neighbors.  It is a great
way for newcomers

and long-time residents to meet new friends
and share experiences.

One month you will be the host and prepare
the entree, asking your guests to bring
something to complete the meal.  The other
two months, you will be guests at another
couple’s home.  This is not a gourmet
group–it’s about getting together to meet
new

friends.  The host couple will contact the
other two couples to find a mutually
convenient time and date for your dinner.

We will be taking registration until early
August.  Please e-mail us at

Gerie123@aol.com
with your names,
address, phone numbers, and e-mail
addresses.  We will acknowledge

your request as it is received.  You will
receive the participant list and full
instructions shortly after reservations
close in August.  If you have any questions,
please call Gerie Whitney at 269-4300 or
e-mail Gerie123@aol.com.

The Activities Committee appreciates your
participation!

Rally For The Cure Golf
Tournament

On July 26th we will have the
Rally For a Cure
here at St.
James.  This is the annual golf
tournament for the Susan G. Komen Breast
Cancer Foundation.  Our neighborhood has
been wonderful responding to this
cause.  Let’s try to do it again this
year.

Donate whatever you can and we will at
the very least be a hole sponsor!  Last
year we were able to sponsor a hole and
the table cloths at the luncheon.  Since
there are so many of us, let’s try for a
“gold sponsor” this year.  A small
donation for everyone could accomplish
this goal.

There is a basket on my front porch,
just drop your donation in there and I
will pick it up each day.

Also, I am collecting money for tribute
flags.  If you need a tribute flag form,
they too are in the basket on my porch.
I would like to have all donations in by
July 10th.

Thank you for your wonderful support of
this charity over the years!  Give me a
call if you have any questions.

Mobley, noted author and Civil War historian. His
program: "President Jefferson Davis and North
Carolina Governor Zebulon Vance: Quarrelsome

presentation is a reinterpretation of Gov. Vance’s
actions throughout the Civil War which many
historians believe were negative toward the
Confederate cause. Mobley’s research findings
suggest that Vance was a devoted nationalist.

In The Garden

Its that time of year! Spring is
beginning to spring up all over the
neighborhoods.

Our gardens are waking up and crying for
help. If you have ever committed crepe
murder, starved or drowned your
plantings, provided a banquet of deer
food THIS COURSE IS FOR YOU! The
Extension’s Master Gardeners and their
instructor have offered to help us
correct our mistakes without our even
leaving out neighborhood. If 10 of us
join together, the class can be held
here (e.g. my house). The tentative
start time is Thursday, May 5th, 2:00 to
4:00 PM.  It will meet every Thursday
until June 9th.  The cost is $60 ( plus
$10 for the Master Gardener Monthly
Guide Book if you do not already have
one).  If you are interested in taking
the course or want more information you
can e-mail me at:

Looking for many
good men and women.  The Flea Market needs your
help.

Looking for a fun way to spend Thursday afternoon?
Want to make some new friends? Or more importantly,
help us raise money for students?

We still need a large number of men (or women – lots
of light stuff) to help load trucks at Sentry
Storage, Thursday afternoon, April 28, starting at
2:00 pm.  This is a huge undertaking and the more
people we have the easier it becomes for all helping
out.  This is a
one of the
biggest fund raisers of the year for the Service
Club
and one that really gives our less
fortunate Brunswick County residents a chance to buy
things they otherwise could not afford. The ultimate
winner in all of this are many young high school
college-bound senior and several BCC nursing
students.  The money raised by this event goes
towards the scholarships program.

Like all things we do here in St James it takes on a
bit of a party atmosphere and is rewarding in
itself.  If you have never participated in one of
these moves please consider it this year because we
really need your help. Usually we have 30 – 40
people to help with this effort. To date we only
have 9 volunteers, so please come join us.  If you
can help, please contact Doug Pratt,

dpratt001@ec.rr.com
, 854-0023.

St. James
Service Club Flea Market

TEN, NINE, EIGHT..

The countdown to the Flea Market continues.  Just
two more Mondays left to drop off your items at
Sentry Storage on Route 211 between the hours of
2:30PM and 4:30PM.  These dates are today, April
11th and the 18th.  The last date for furniture
pickup is Thursday, April 14th

We also need additional help with furniture
pricing
at Brunswick Community College on
Friday, the day before the Flea Market. If you are
able to help with this or need to schedule a
furniture pickup, please call Betty Pratt at
854-0023.

 A Thank You

The St. James Knitters Club approached the POA
Warrior Ride Committee several weeks ago, asking if
they could donate a patriotic afghan to our visiting
warrior women.   On March 31, 2011 three
representatives of the St. James Knitters brought
not one – but three beautiful afghans and presented
them to three lucky women whose names were selected
in a drawing.  Many hearts and hands provided these
handmade treasures.  Thank you all for your
generosity and thoughtfulness.

And Another Thank You!

On behalf of the
American Red Cross, and more importantly, the
patients and families that depend on your efforts,
THANK YOU.  The St. James Community Blood Drive was
an overwhelming success due to the generous support
of our St. James neighbors.  We collected 105 units
of blood, 12 of which were from 6 double red cell
donors. CONGRATULATIONS!  A special thank you to The
Clubs, Mr. John Brown and Ms. Brandee Donnelly for
their support in providing a comfortable location,
allowing us to serve more people.  Our next blood
drive will be on Monday, September 26, 2011.  Please
save the date.  Thank you for caring enough to
give.  Sue Mills

St. James Lends a Helping Hand to one of Their Own

Keith Kopka St. James Plantation Fundraiser

On Friday, November 19, St. James Plantation once again exceeded everyone’s expectations. Thanks to the residents of St. James, a family in need got a little bit of help, but a lot more than expected.  Check out WECT’s story below:

St. James fundraiser more than doubles its goal

Reported by Kim Ratcliff

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) – A group of residents from St. James Plantation hosted a golf tournament and appreciation day Friday in honor of Chef Keith Kopka.  They said they wanted to “Take Care of their Own” and they did.

Kopka came to St. James three years ago.  He was diagnosed with ALS 9 months ago.  Also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, ALS is a degenerative neurological disease that destroys the brain’s ability to control voluntary muscles.

Kopka, who is still working with the aid of a cane, will soon have to leave his job as the disease continues to advance. Once without a job, Keith, his wife Megan, and kids Bruce and Jaden, ages 14 and 11, will face a six-month financial gap before long term disability payments start.

When word of the event spread, St. James was forced to open a second golf course to accommodate the hundreds of golfers who signed up to play.  That’s when organizers realized they would easily reach their goal of $30,000.

With the help of family members who traveled hundreds of miles, residents of St. James Plantation were happy to host this in their backyard with lots of caring friends.

The event raised more than $75,000 for Kopka and his family.  That money will be used to help pay medical bills and supplement the income Kopka will lose when he is forced to quit work at the end of the year.

If you recognize the name “Kopka,” then you may realize Keith is Kim Ratcliff’s brother.  She can’t thank everyone enough for what they have done for his family.
